Bollywood dance party coming to Saratoga

The streets of downtown Saratoga will turn into a scene out of a Bollywood movie as the Saratoga Village Development Council, with help from Saratoga High School students, will host the third annual "Saratoga Swings: Bollywood Dance."

Close to 600 people attended last year's event and watched performers dance to Bollywood music before heading out to the dance floor to make some moves themselves. Organizers say the event will start off with performances, but then will be opened up to freestyle dancing for the rest of the night.

This year's event will take place on Aug. 21, 5-8 p.m., in the parking lot of Bank of America, 14476 Big Basin Way.

Saratoga High student Vishal Goel said organizers want everyone to have a good time. So although there won't be any formal Bollywood dance lessons, the performers will most likely hit the dance floor with guests and show them one dance move to get the party started.

"We want people to feel comfortable," Vishal said. "We want people out there and dancing even if they don't know the moves. They can watch the performers and copy their moves."

For those unfamiliar with the term "Bollywood," Vishal explained it this way: "It's basically the Indian version of Hollywood. They throw in a bunch of songs and dances in the movies, and the audience enjoys it."
A henna tattoo artist will be on hand, as well as a jewelry booth. The henna tattoo booth is one of the more popular parts of the event, organizers have said in the past.

Hong's Gourmet, a Chinese restaurant on Big Basin Way, will be serving food. Organizers said they hope to have more restaurants step up and get involved with the event.

Although the event is all about fun, there is another practical reason for it.
"The real purpose, and why we started this three years ago, was to increase the foot traffic of downtown Saratoga. We want to bring people from all over and have them come to Saratoga and enjoy downtown," Vishal said.

Organizers are still looking for businesses to sponsor the event and restaurants to serve food during the three-hour dance party.
